Methodoku Online

Methodoku Online is a web version of Mark Davies' popular ringing puzzle, which you can purchase here.

Created by Thomas Haslam, who quite frankly got bored of doing the daily puzzle after the first few months and is perpetually surprised that people are still regularly playing.

Basic Rules

  • Each number ("bell") must appear once in each row
  • Bells may only move 1 space horizontally between rows

Puzzle-specific Rules

Jump Changes

This increases the number of spaces bells are allowed to move horizontally between rows

Leading

This is when a bell appears in the first column

Lying

This is when a bell appears in the last column

Places

A "place" is when a bell does not change position between rows. A "Nths place" is when this happens in the Nth column

Long Places

A long place is 2 or more places in a row

Non-place Direction Changes

A direction change is when a bell changes which horizontal direction it goes between rows. If non-place direction changes are not allowed, bells cannot change direction without making a place in between.

Note: When jump changes are allowed, bells are allowed to change from jumping two bells rightwards to one bell rightwards, since this doesn't change which direction they are going.

True Method

A true method cannot have any repeated rows.

Note: this rule won't appear in current puzzles since it was judged too annoying to keep track of.
